One Handed Controller (Right Hand) By Ben Heck

Last year we looked at the
left hand version of this controller. Here we will take a look at the right hand one.

On first inspection, the controller appears like any other Xbox 360 controller on the right hand side. On the left side however you will notice a few changes.

Evil Controllers - '6 Switch' Xbox360 Controller

6 Switch Xbox360 Controller from Evil Controllers

Evil Controllers make both aesthetic and gameplay assisting modifications to Xbox360 and PS3 controllers. In additon Evil also make alterations to controllers to improve accessiblity with their custom design service alongside a range of 'off the shelf' designs. One such design is their '6 Switch' controller.

At SpecialEffect we work with people with a wide range of disabilities. Some issues, however, we see recurring again and again. Obstacles such as a difficulty reaching some of the buttons (often the triggers at the back) or being able to hold down a button (such as to holding aim in in an FPS when a 'toggle aim' option is not available) are some of these common occurances.

The big G. Golf. I've never really understood the appeal. Silly rules about wearing a collar, rain, and flailing about in a sand-pit. But Crazy Golf. I get that. That is fun.

MiniGolf Accessible is crazy golf given an accessibility make over. Putt the ball into 18 different holes in as few shots as possible. You can choose from three different ways of playing: One-switch, Mouse Pointer or Keyboard.

Loan Library: Switch Dance Dance Revolution

By One Switch
Ellie's loan switch accessible Dance Dance Revolution set-up.

The controller above came about from meeting up with Ellie with her loan-library adapted Wii controller and her love of dance games. She expressed an interest in trying out Dance Mat type games which she'd previously never played.

The SpecialEffect adapted JoyPad allows Ellie to place the four coloured buttons wherever she wishes to play Konami Dance Dance Revolution (aka Dancing Stage) games. We really hope she has as much fun playing it as I had making and testing it.

Orboid requires a cool head, steady nerves, bags of patience and lightening reactions. Using one button (either left mouse click or space) you must link all the orbs on each level to progress.

Each orb, once linked, gains a 360 degree rotating canon which you can then fire onto another orb to continue linking them up. To fire press either space or left click. As levels progress strategy becomes as important as timing as you must find a route which will allow you to reach the final orb without blocking yourself off (beams block other beams) from the remaining orbs. If you do get stuck, pressing 'R' will retry the level from the beginning. Other obstructions include walls and spiky orbs which, when hit, restart your attempt at the level.

Switchamajig

By One Switch

Although the iPad is not presently a very good platform for switch access for a variety of reasons, it seems that it can be an excellent switch itself when paired to a Switchamajig. The video above pretty much explains it all. Very nice!

PC (opens in a browser)

This is the new game of the Rypi console (
C1ic.mx), it's called "Fruit Ninja Kapow", based on the original game "Fruit Ninja" created by HALFBRICK.

The only reason for this version, is to bring the actual experience of the game in a very accessible way, as the other games and the console itself the game can be controlled using just one switch.

Pony Club Races

PC (opens in a browser)

There are ten levels to play against the clock in this Lego inspired one button (space) horse jumping game. Each level gets slightly harder with more or bigger jumps. Once you have selected your rider at the beginning of the game using the mouse you can then navigate and play the game using just the space bar.

Timing is key. However, if you miss time your jump and land on a fence or don't even leave the ground you will be able to continue without any penalty (except losing some seconds on the clock) and try the jump again. If you complete the course within the time you can press space to try the next level. If you don't succeed, press space to retry it.

Alternative Christmas

By One Switch

I don't know quite what to make of Specialbites's collection of eight switch accessible Christmas activities. They're a little bit odd. One is of Rudolph the red nosed reindeer getting scared by a possessed Christmas tree, then poo-ing in a toilet. Another is of a magic tree firing cannon balls at a cloud of brussel sprouts. Another is Rudolph starting a fire, melting a snowman whilst staring and grinning. Often there's a mad echoing laugh, or funeral march version of Away in a Manger.
