PS3/Xbox 360 (tested on both) - PLATINUMGAMES INC/ SEGA

'Being bad never felt so good.'

'The last survivor survivor of an ancient Witch clan keeping the balance beteween light, dark and chaos. With ocer-the-top action in extreme evnvironments. Bayonetta will lure you into new realms of intensity.'

The description on the back of the box sums Bayonetta up pretty well, with 'over-the-top' and 'intensity' being the dominating features of the game. This can only be seen as positive. With many big games titles becoming more and more concerned over realism and accuracy, and, perhaps fairly, accused of taking themselves a little too seriously ocasionally. Bayonetta comes as a breath of fresh air, and a pretty big lungful it is too.

The gameplay, as you would expect from the description, is fast and intense. Bayonetta does offer an 'Automatic' mode in 'Easy' and 'Very Easy' difficulty modes. This allows you to avoid quick and complex button combinations in combat situations, using just one button to pull of the same moves ('Y' on Xbox and 'Triangle' on PS3). When using this gameplay mode you are not resricted from using other buttons and are you are free to use combinations as you like.

In addition to the combat buttons the left analog stick is used for movement and 'A' on Xbox and 'X' on Ps3 is used to jump with 'X'/ 'Square' used for interaction.

There are many other button uses, but when playing in 'Automatic' mode are uneccessary (you need to use certain buttons for certain moves in a practice arena before you start in order to continue to the game itself).

Bayonetta proves to be an exciting, fast paced and absorbing gaming experience, which, as a result of the clever creation of 'Automatic' mode, offers itself to many more players who may be put of by the fast reactions and movement usually required by the genre.

The video below aims to show more clearly the typical use buttons during a typical section of  Bayonetta gameplay using 'Automatic' mode. The switches are used with a C-SID (Console Switch Interface Deluxe) with the hand out of shot using a joystick to control direction.
